In short
- Two groups: the first two of each group cross into the semi-finals.
- Three groups: the three winners plus the best runner-up.
- Four groups: the winners go to the semi-finals or the first two go to the quarter-finals.
Two groups, the first two
Eight teams, two groups of four. First and second in each group: four teams, one semi-final without a bye. First A against second B, first B against second A, so that the group winners don't meet immediately.
That's 12 group games, two semi-finals and one final. You set the cross pairing in the event using the placeholders.
Three groups, the best second
There are three group winners. One is missing for a semi-final. The place goes to the best runner-up: the most points, then the direct comparison, then the difference. This is in the criteria before the tournament, not in a discussion on the boards.
Four groups are functioning smoothly again: four winners, one semi-final. Or eight teams in the quarterfinals if the runners-up come along. Six teams, on the other hand, need two byes for the tree to rise.
What you don't invent on game day
How many points a draw brings and whether the direct comparison comes before the goal difference. Both are in the standings before the first game kicks off.
Whether the third party in the group is still playing for a place. This is a separate game, not moving up the table. More about this in the guide to the placement games.
