In short
- Everyone against everyone has n × (n − 1) / 2 games. Eight teams: 28, two groups of four: 12 plus knockout round.
- Groups are worthwhile for groups of around six teams or if there is to be a final at the end.
- With four or five teams, free-for-all is shorter and easier to explain.
The number of games decides
For n teams there are n × (n − 1) / 2 games. Eight teams: 28. Six teams: 15. Four teams: 6. If the number is odd, each round has a bye.
Two groups of four instead of one big everyone against everyone: 12 group games plus two semi-finals and a final. With ten minutes playing time, two minutes break and two fields, it's finished at 10:34 instead of 11:46.
When the group is the right answer
If each team should have at least three games and then a final is planned. Teams of four in the group play exactly three games, then the table is ready.
When a bye in a large group leaves a team without a game for 20 minutes and the parents are already at the exit. Smaller groups keep the rounds short.
When you stick with everyone against everyone
With four or five teams, the full round is shorter than any construction with a semifinal. Five teams is 10 games, and a knockout tree with byes is worse explained than a table.
When the tournament winner should be first in the table and no single final decides the day. Then there is no surprise from a game, but also no second place, which was just a bad semi-final.
