In short
- Games = n × (n − 1) / 2. Four teams: 6, five: 10, six: 15, eight: 28, ten: 45, twelve: 66.
- Even number of teams: n − 1 rounds with n / 2 games each. Odd: n rounds, each with a bye.
- Eight teams on a field with 10 minutes per game is 280 minutes of pure playing time.
The formula
Each team plays against each other exactly once. For n teams, this is n × (n − 1) / 2 games. Four teams: 6. Five: 10. Six: 15. Seven: 21. Eight: 28. Ten: 45. Twelve: 66.
There and back doubles the number. This is a catch in the event, not a second tournament. A simple round is almost always enough for a day in the hall.
Rounds and byes
If the number of teams is even, each round has n / 2 games, and there are n − 1 rounds. Eight teams: four games per round, seven rounds.
If the number is odd, each round has a bye. Five teams: two games, one team pauses, five rounds until everyone has paused once. The bye is not a game and does not require a field.
From the number to the time
28 games on a field of 10 minutes each are 280 minutes without a break, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. On two fields this is only halved if no team is in both games of a wave. The game plan ensures that.
The same 28 games are the reason why indoor tournaments with six teams or more often play in groups. The formula for the group is the same, just with the smaller number of teams, and the groups run in parallel.
